Call For Papers and Tutorials focused on *virtual agents, physiology and
human-computer interactions* at the upcoming Intelligent Virtual Agent
workshop (http://iva2016.ict.usc.edu/) on Physiologically Aware Virtual
Agents (PAVA)

************************************************************************

We would like to invite you to submit papers and/or attend our upcoming
workshop focused on developing the next generation of virtual agents. We
are looking for proposals that explore the following questions:

   - 1. How do physiological states relate to feeling states in a given
   situation? What are the physiological states that denote stress,
   relaxation, empathy, etc?
   - 2. How do we address the data processing challenges within this
   dynamic closed-loop environment such that the virtual agents’ behavior can
   be modified in real-time?
   - 3. Is it possible that PAVAs can exceed human-to-human communication
   and emotion recognition capabilities?
   - 4. What are the ethical boundaries to PAVAs? E.g., should Google Maps
   navigation change your route based on your emotional state? Could a virtual
   customer assistant on Time Warner Cable wait until your heart rate has
   lowered before providing assistance
   - 5. We encourage submissions from individuals that who willing/able to
   demonstrate live-action virtual assistants that involve physiology in some
   manner.
   - 6. More broadly, while the main topic is the development of PAVAs,
   other work on physiologically aware/reactive interfaces or systems is also
   relevant. If you have a related topic, email the organizers and we will
   provide whatever help is needed to decide.

Other topics may indeed be appropriate, so feel free to contact Glenn Fox (
glennfox at usc.edu) if you have further questions.

Important Dates
-----------------------

   - August 5th, 2016: Paper Submission due date(email to request extension)
   - August 26, 2016: Paper Acceptance Notification
   - September 20, 2016: Workshop is held at IVA 2016
   <http://iva2016.ict.usc.edu/> in Los Angeles

Tutorials
------------
We also invite experts in different areas to propose half-day or full-day
tutorials relevant to the theme of Physiologically Aware Virtual Agents

Tutorials should demonstrate some aspect of programming VR characters or
interactions or solving some problems of working in closed loop dynamic
interchanges--broadly defined.

The responsibilities of tutorial organizers include:

1. Setting up a demonstration or concept to be presented at the workshop

2. Running the demonstration at the workshop.

3. Serving as a resource for appropriate collaborations and the building of
projects.

Please submit the following information (up to 3 pages, open format):
*   Title of tutorial
*   Motivation or background
* Overview of tutorial including topics covered and schedule
*   Target audience or prerequisites
* Tutorial speaker(s), including bio sketches / short CVs
* Links and references relevant to the tutorial
* A 150 - 250 word abstract suitable for advertising the tutorial in HRI
2017
