Sheridan College, a post-secondary polytechnic institute located just outside Toronto, Canada is establishing an interdisciplinary cluster of research and development in the area of virtual humans. As a result, we are currently advertising for two permanent full-time faculty members who will work primarily on research projects in this area. We’ve recently received initial funding for this work from both Provincial and Federal government funding bodies, and will be continuing to build this as a permanent key area of interdisciplinary research within our institution and region. This is an institution-wide research initiative that builds on the collaborative expertise of faculty within areas of the digital arts, applied computing, social sciences and humanities, and applied health as well as three of our research centres: Screen Industries Research and Training Centre, Centre for Mobile Innovation, and Centre for Elder Research. Initial partners and collaborators include multiple media and entertainment technology and content production companies, healthcare institutions, and external academic researchers in machine and deep learning associated with the Vector Institute, a new Canadian national centre of excellence for artificial intelligence based in Toronto.

Full job descriptions and the on-line application process are available through the following links:

This initiative will include research and development of virtual human applications within media and entertainment as well as areas of individual and social well-being including healthcare, education, and elderly care. A related project underway includes a two year project investigating the relationship between empathy and attitudes resulting from virtual reality experiences. The intent is that the new Sheridan faculty hires will be our leaders of collaboration with university and other external academic and industry researchers in the virtual humans area, as well as foster research and teaching in this area across multiple faculties at Sheridan.

Thank you for your consideration of this information. Please feel free to circulate as you wish.

John
