[iva] Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Machine Learning, National Robotarium, Edinburgh

Rieser, Verena V.T.Rieser at hw.ac.uk
Tue Feb 2 15:55:44 CET 2021

This faculty opening is an exciting and challenging opportunity to be part of the new National Robotarium and Edinburgh Centre of Robotics academic team.

Closing date: 5th March 2021

** The National Robotarium **

The National Robotarium is a world-leading research and development facility in robotics and related research fields by Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh.

Opening on Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh Campus in 2022, the £22.4M purpose-built centre will have unrivalled facilities, adding to our laboratories in Autonomous Systems including Ocean Systems, Human Robotic Interaction and Assisted Living, to explore collaborative interaction between humans, robots, and their environments. It builds on initial research infrastructures at the Edinburgh Centre of Robotics and funding of over £120M over the last 7 years, including the prestigious Centre for Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems, for which the candidate will be eligible for funded PhD student supervision.

With a strong focus on entrepreneurship and job creation, the National Robotarium will offer an ecosystem for industry collaboration where humans and robots work in partnership. As such, we also encourage applicants with a background in industry research to apply.

** About our team **

You will join the Department of Computer Science in the School of Mathematical & Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. The department is internationally renowned for its world-class research across a number of areas, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, natural language processing, formal methods, programming languages, parallel computation, cyber security and safety, and human-computer and human-robot interaction.

** Candidate profile **

The successful candidates will have (or be near to completing) a PhD, an established research agenda and the enthusiasm and ability to undertake original research, and to lead a research group. They will show excellent teaching capability and engagement with academic supervision. We are seeking current and future leaders in the field. We expect the candidate to take a leading role in the development of new applications of machine learning for robotics and autonomous systems and be interested in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team across Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh Universities.

We seek candidates with research interests in the development of cutting-edge machine learning methods with direct applications to robotics and real-world use cases. The candidate's research focus might involve, for example (in no particular order):

• Multimodal machine learning
• Transparent machine learning (ML) and explainable AI
• Deep reinforcement learning and the interface of reinforcement learning with data driven ML
• Understanding requirements of real-world use cases for ML, incl. but not limited to:
• Low resource ML, including few-shot/zero shot and transfer learning
• Fairness and ethical application of ML
• Security and privacy aspects of ML
• Efficient ML, including model distillation and sustainable ML
• Application areas of robotics and human-robot interaction, for example, vision, control and NLP.

Candidates should have a strong technical track record and be interested and able to teach undergraduate and master’s level courses in areas such as AI, machine learning, robotics, deep learning and neural networks.

We are committed to support family friendly work practices and part-time working options. We especially encourage women and members of underrepresented groups to apply for this position.

** How to Apply **

Applications can be submitted up to midnight (UK time) on 5th March 2021.
