Applications are sought for a Research Associate post in the Interaction Lab in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.  The Research Associate  will work on the EPSRC project "MaDrIgAL - Multi-Dimensional Interaction Management and Adaptive Learning" (see http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N017536/1) to investigate, develop, and evaluate advanced machine learning approaches for spoken dialogue systems. In particular, we seek a candidate with experience in statistical approaches to spoken language understanding, dialogue state tracking, or closely related fields, as well as data collection and system evaluation.

The post will be located in the Interaction Lab at Heriot Watt University's School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS), see www.macs.hw.ac.uk/InteractionLab. The successful candidate will join and collaborate with a group of 6 postdoctoral researchers and 5 faculty members. The project is lead by Dr. Simon Keizer and Dr. Verena Rieser. The project also involves collaboration between Heriot-Watt University, Tilburg University (Netherlands), and  SemVox GmbH (Germany).

The post is available for 24 months in the first instance, with opportunities for extension.


Principal Duties:
Detailed research duties are to implement and evaluate methods for spoken language understanding and dialogue state monitoring, and to collect and analyse dialogue data. The successful applicant will also present the research outputs at project meetings and international conferences.

The main duties of the post are to perform collaborative research on the above-named EPSRC project, to contribute to research publications, to write and submit research articles, and to participate in EPSRC project research meetings and international conferences.


Key Objectives:
-     To implement and evaluate methods for spoken language understanding and dialogue state monitoring.
-     To collect and analyse dialogue data.
-     To contribute to dissemination activities as specified in the project Technical Annexe.

Essential criteria:
-     Experience (at PhD level or equivalent) in spoken dialogue systems or closely related fields.
-     Experience in statistical modelling and analysis.
-     Experience with experimental data collection and analysis.
-     Programming in Java and/or C++ and/or Python and/or Matlab.
