The Department of Computer Science<http://cs.aalto.fi/en/> at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland (one of the most livable cities in the world) is offering a

Fully funded Doctoral Candidate position in the field of COMPUTER AND VIDEO GAMES, with a focus on combining games and physical exercise and/or movement AI for physically based simulated characters (e.g., “active ragdolls”)

The position belongs to Aalto University’s career system and the selected person will be appointed for a two-year fixed term appointment with an option for renewal for another two years. Aalto University is a new university created in 2010 from the merger of three Finland’s top universities: Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Helsinki has consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the world (e.g., http://edition.cnn.com/2016/08/18/travel/most-livable-city-2016/), and is the home for many leading game companies such as Supercell, Rovio, and Remedy Entertainment.

The position is funded from research projects investigating the use of intelligent virtual characters in sports and physical exercise, e.g., in the form of virtual coaches or martial arts sparring partners. The candidate is expected to conduct research towards a doctoral dissertation in either movement AI algorithms or utilizing such technology in games and applications that motivate physical activity or help in learning movement skills.

The selected candidate will work under the supervision of prof. Perttu Hämäläinen. Hämäläinen’s research group has an excellent track record in both movement AI and augmented reality sports and exercise. The group publishes at top venues such as ACM SIGGRAPH and ACM CHI and collaborates with other leading groups; examples can be found at https://medialab.aalto.fi/research/research-groups/game-research-group/ and prof. Responsibilities

In addition to research work, persons hired are expected to participate in teaching following the standard practices at the department (5% of working hours).

Qualifications

The candidate should have a Master’s degree in a related field such as HCI or machine learning. Good command of English is a necessary prerequisite.

Compensation, working hours and place of work

The starting salary for the position is EUR 2 424,00 which will rise, given good success in doctoral studies. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload is 1 600 hours. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus.
