About the Position

The Department of Computer Science (http://cs.siu.edu) at Southern Illinois University (http://siu.edu) invites applications for Ph.D. and positions to work on Computer Animation & Simulation, and/or Virtual Reality Interaction. We are looking for individuals motivated to pursue research projects in the context of Motion Analysis and Synthesis, Multi-Character Narrative Simulation, Intelligent Virtual Characters, Embodied & Multimodal Interaction and Immersive Interaction. The positions are part of the newly funded Graphics & Entertainment Technology Lab.

In SIU we will focus on developing novel techniques for analyzing and synthesizing human motion data, which is then applied to virtual characters. Other issues include the social interaction abilities of the virtual characters (both understanding the social signals of the human partners, as well as selecting appropriate social signals for the character to produce in response). We are also aiming at understanding the way that humans interact with intelligent virtual characters within virtual worlds. The successful candidates will contribute to the research and teaching of the department.

Expectations

Candidates should have a BS in Computer Science, Informatics, Computer Engineering, or a similar area, along with knowledge of and experience in the areas of Computer Graphics & Animation, Virtual Reality, and/or Human-Computer Interaction.

Ideal candidates should be fluent in English, programming (C#, C++, and Java preferred), and well versed in mathematics. We particularly encourage individuals interested in a subset of the following areas: Graphics/Animation (OpenGL, Unity3D, Maya, etc.), Mathematical Optimization (such as Convex and Non-Convex Optimization), Signal Processing (Multimodal Signal Processing and Recognition), and Machine Learning (Graphical Models, Deep Learning).

Start Date

The selected candidates are expected to start in August 2017.

Compensation

Successful Ph.D. applicants will receive a tuition waiver and stipend (~$1500) to cover living expenses.
